30 Rock and The Office Spec Scripts

September 30, 2010

Sorry, this isn’t another “Spec Script Toolkit” for 30 Rock or The Office (although links to the actual scripts are at the bottom of the post)…

As I was glancing back through some of my blog posts for Community and Modern Family, I realized that I was spitting some subtle venom at the idea of writing specs for The Office and 30 Rock.  I said that by writing specs for Community and Modern Family, that it would “benefit from being (hopefully) a diamond in the rough filled with The Office [and] 30 Rock … scripts.”  Let me clarify…I don’t think you shouldn’t continue to write these specs; they’re both great shows that have been on the air for a while.  I was simply stating that it might be a good idea to be ahead of the curve with some of the newer shows.  If you have a great idea for a 30 Rock episode or The Office, by all means write it!  At the end of the day, you’re going to be judged on your writing, not your choice in what show you spec (assuming it’s at least still on the air).

For example, take a look at the recent winners / finalists from Scriptapalooza’s TV script writing contest.  There are a lot of Modern Family scripts on the list, but there are still a good amount of 30 Rock and The Office scripts–and hell, two of the three winners wrote 30 Rock episodes!  (Sadly, I didn’t notice any Community scripts on the list…)

So, today I’m back-tracking a little bit would recommend that you just write a spec for whatever show you want.  Keep in mind that the future of these two shows might be limited, so you may not get many more years of use out of the spec, but if you’re a writer, you should be writing new specs every year anyway.

For those of you who have no intention of ever writing a 30 Rock or The Office spec, I’d still highly recommend you read through some off the actual scripts (below) to understand how two truly great shows are written. Tina Fey is awesome.   Dear Tina Fey, thank you for 30 Rock.  And thank you for the Barefoot Contessa (aka the “Food Ho” as my girlfriend and I refer to her as…lovingly, not in a slutty-ho kind of way) reference on this year’s season premiere.  I was in sitcom heaven.  Okay, anyway, this post is getting weird…

You can find all these free scripts on Lee Thomson’s blog, which is THE GREATEST TV SCRIPT DATABASE ANYWHERE EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD.
